SOETNGO supports climate-vulnerable communities by training women in beekeeping, providing hives, and promoting sustainable livelihoods, aiming for resilient socio-ecological systems by 2040.

Bee-keeping is a great climate-smart option for small-scale farmers as it’s not reliant on soil quality or rainfall so it can help to diversify farmer’s incomes and enterprises. “This project is providing an opportunity for alternative livelihoods, in case you fail in keeping an animal”.

SOETNGO will support climate-vulnerable communities targeting men, women, and youth including people with disabilities. We intent to train women on bee keeping and ensure we give each woman a bee hive. Bee Keeping has always been known to be the best pollinator and also a natural barrier for wild animals. This will ensure that human wildlife conflict which occasionally happen is minimized.

The Programme goal is Resilient and productive socio-ecological systems by 2040 through landscape restoration, livelihoods building for 200,000 smallholder farmers (men, women, youth and people with disabilities) covering two target Counties around Mt Elgon in Kenya. This programme will help build substantial carbon sinks and sequestration opportunities, allowing viable returns to both small-holder farmers and investors.

The programme will seek to achieve this through 1) Increased resilience and diversified livelihoods for small-holder households; 2) Improved sustainable income for communities from resilient climate smart value chains; 3) Diversified and sustainable income streams through carbon market engagements; and 4) Strengthened institutional, knowledge sharing and regulatory systems/framework (policies) for climate-responsive planning/development and carbon trading.
